On 24 April 2025, I spontaneously threw myself on the saddle and cycled from Liège to Flensburg, a small town in northern Germany, in 3.5 days, covering around 600km. After a visit to the Viking museum ‘Haddeby / Haithabu’, I was welcomed by the SPD Flensburg at a parliamentary group meeting.
Special thanks to Lisa for the nice welcome and the accommodation in Flensburg.
Day 1 - 152km: The first day, was the kind of day you don't like, it just rained all day and after several wet hours on the bike, I went to a hotel in the evening hoping to get my clothes dry.
Day 2 - 148km: With semi-dry clothes and a stomach ache, I continued on day two. The grey weather accompanied me the whole day, luckily it didn't start to rain.
Day 3 - 177km: With my stomach still aching slightly, I went to a pharmacy on the third day where they gave me some medicine for the stomach pain. After some time and a second breakfast at 11am, I felt better. In the early evening I crossed the Elbe a little north of Hamburg
Day 4 - 118km: On the last day I cycled to Flensburg and took the afternoon to explore the town a bit. However, everything was closed because I arrived on a Sunday.
Day 5 - Sightseeing day: On the fifth day I fulfilled my long-awaited wish to visit the Viking museum ‘Haddeby / Haithabu’ near Schleswig. In the evening, my colleague Lisa took me to a parliamentary group meeting of the Flensburg SPD and gave me a brief tour of her workplace in Flensburg Town Hall.
